Frequently asked questions

Where/when do the orchestra rehearse?

Coventry Central Hall, between September 2021 and our final celebration concert on April 2nd 2022.
There are some extra rehearsals towards the performance date, but generally speaking these will be Thursdays 7:30-10pm.

For a full list of provisional dates, please see here

When is the final celebration concert?

April 2nd, 2022, at the Central Hall.

Who can be in the orchestra?

This orchestra is for adults who can already play an instrument. This will be an excellently fun project to be a part of, and we want to create something of musical quality, which is why this is not open to beginners.

We are particularly keen to encourage both those who have let their instruments gather dust to once again get their instrument out, as well as anyone who currently regularly pays with an ensemble also.

We would love to involve musicians who play instruments which are not normally part of the orchestra, so that we can perform music reflecting all of Coventry's musical culture.

How much is membership?

This whole project has very kindly been funded by the Coventry and Nuneaton Methodist Circuit, supported by Methodist Church at Coventry Central Hall, so membership is completely free!

There may be costs involved if we end up buying any branded clothing or props for our concert, but we will keep this to a minimum.

What will we be performing?

Our repertoire will be informed by the musicians which sign up, but in essence we want to showcase firstly the culture of Coventry (be that by performing works/songs written in or about Coventry or finding other musical connections), as well as showcasing the orchestra itself with experts form the incredible orchestral tradition.

Our promise is that this will be the most eclectic and energetic programme you will ever perform!

How can I join the Orchestra?

Head to the ‘get involved’ page, and follow the link.

Who else will be performing at the celebration concert?

We are going to be supported by a ‘festival chorus’, made up from local choirs and singers. If you’d like to get involved as a singer or representing a choir, then please register your interest on the ‘get involved’ page.

We are also going to feature local performing groups who perhaps wouldn’t normally be able to perform on this scale. If you represent a group who’d like to perform a supporting role to the celebration concert, then please register your interest on the Get Involved page.

Will the Coventry city of Culture Orchestra exist beyond our 'City of Culture' year?

...we hope so! but at the moment we are just looking towards this celebration concert on 2nd April 2022. No commitment is needed beyond 2nd May 2022, which will be for a final 'artists in residence' event at Coventry Central Hall.
